Penn State Behrend is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and outreach. As part of a major research and land grant university, the college is uniquely positioned to advance the economic, social, and intellectual welfare of northwestern Pennsylvania.
Small College Setting
Penn State Behrend grants four-year and graduate Penn State degrees. The college's
4,600 students receive close personal attention from faculty, and they regularly engage in research projects, out-of-class learning experiences, and internships.
Location Near the intersection of Interstates 79, 86, and 90 in suburban Erie,
Pennsylvania. Mileage to nearby cities: Buffalo, 90; Cleveland, 100; Pittsburgh, 125; Rochester, 165.

History Established in 1948 with Mary Behrend's gift of her 400-acre Glenhill Farm estate, including historic Glenhill Farmhouse, to Penn State. Elevated to college status in 1971, when it became the first Penn State location outside of University Park to begin granting bachelor's degrees.
Degrees & Enrollment Offering thirty-four bachelor's, six associate, four pre-professional, and two graduate degree programs. Enrollment of more than 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students, representing thirty-five states and territories and twenty-eight countries. Among those Penn State Behrend students who go on to graduate with Penn State degrees, more than 75 percent complete their degrees at the college.
Faculty & Staff More than 650, including 226 full-time and 77 part-time faculty members in four schools--the Sam and Irene Black School of Business, the School of Engineering, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Science--plus a nursing program.
Campus 725 acres and more than fifty buildings. Recognized as an arboretum through its membership in the American Public Gardens Association, the Penn State Behrend campus is home to more than 200 species of native and exotic trees. The latest facilities
on campus include an indoor athletics and recreation center, an observatory, a chapel and carillon, and the 160,000-square-foot Research and Economic Development Center (REDC), which houses the Sam and Irene Black School of Business and the School of Engineering. Penn State Behrend was one of the first educational institutions in the country to bring its schools of business and engineering together under one roof in the REDC.
Residence Life More than 1,650 students living in three traditional-style residence halls, six suite-style halls, and nine apartment buildings. All of the college's residential buildings are named for commanders or ships that took part in the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
Athletics Twenty-one NCAA Division III varsity teams--ten for men and eleven for women. Penn State Behrend is a charter member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) and the Eastern Collegiate Athletic
Conference. The college has captured the AMCC Presidents' Cup, which is given annually to the member school with the strongest overall program, seven of the eight times it has been awarded. In addition to varsity athletics, Penn State Behrend offers four intercollegiate club sports and twenty-two intramural sports.
Student Activities More than 100 student clubs and organizations, ranging from the Astronomy Club and the Association of Black Collegians to the Lion Ambassadors and the Society of Women Engineers.
Knowledge Park at Penn State Erie A 200-acre research and development park housing
knowledge-based companies that benefit from the site's superior
technological infrastructure and Penn State Behrend's strengths in applied
research and technology transfer. At the same time, companies in the park provide valuable research, internship, and employment opportunities for students and graduates of the college.
Research & Outreach Research is a critical area of focus for the college's faculty, staff and students. Annually, Penn State Behrend funds nearly $250,000 in undergraduate research opportunities. The college also oversees operation of more than two dozen outreach centers, programs, and initiatives for business and industry, area school students, and the community. Alumni More than 25,000. Graduates are involved in the Penn State Behrend Alumni Society and the Lake Erie Chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association, both of which develop programs to encourage campus involvement, community outreach, and social interaction.
