SAM AND IRENE BLACK SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Science (BLASC)
Program Chair: Dr. Kenneth Louie

In order to assist you in scheduling classes for the remainder of your program, we have listed some important reminders below. While there may be a few exceptions to these scheduling guidelines (especially for those of you who have transferred in from another academic major or university), most of you will find that these guidelines are applicable.
1. In your fifth semester, you should be completing the following:
Prescribed Courses: |
Supporting Courses |
FNC 300/FIN 301 |
Module Course |
MANGT 300/MGMT 301 |
Module Course |
MRKTG 300/MKTG 301 |
Important notes: It's very important that you complete FNC 300/FIN 301, MANGT 300/MGMT 301, and MRKTG 300/MKTG 301 at this time because these are prerequisites for the upper-level business courses that you will start taking in your 6th semester. In choosing your three modules, please note that your first module must be a business module, your second module must be an international module, and your third module must be a non-business module. If you choose the foreign language module, make sure that you register for the appropriate level of the foreign language. If you are uncertain, make sure you speak with your advisor or an instructor in your foreign language. To avoid getting out of sequence, you should also note that the language courses at Behrend are usually offered in the following pattern each year:
Fall Semester |
Spring Semester |
French 1 and 3 |
French 2 |
German 1 and 3 |
German 2 |
Spanish 1, 2, and 3 |
Spanish 1, 2, and 3 |
(Sometimes, language courses are also offered during the summer.)
2. In your sixth semester, you should be completing the following:
| |
Prescribed Courses |
| |
SCM 310 |
| |
Additional Courses |
| |
International Business (ECNS 470/ECON 470 or FNC 470/FIN 407 or MANGT 480/MGMT 461 or MRKTG 470/MKTG 445 |
| |
Supporting Courses |
| |
Module courses |
Important Notes: This major requires that you complete one international business course (ECNS 470/ECON 470, FNC 470/FIN 407, MANGT 480/MGMT 461, or MRKTG 470/MKTG 445). Assuming you have completed all the prerequisites, it does not matter which one you take -- see the Penn State Bulletin (Blue Book) on-line for a course description of each. You should note that these international business courses have been offered in the following pattern in the recent past:
Fall Semester |
Spring Semester |
FNC 470/FIN 407 |
ECNS 470/ECON 470 |
MRKTG 470/MKTG 445 |
MANGT 480/MGMT 461 |
(In the recent past, ECNS 470/ECON 470 and MRKTG 470/MKTG 445 have also been offered during the summer.)
3. In your seventh semester, you should be completing the following:
Prescribed Courses |
Supporting Courses |
MANGT 470W/MGMT 471W |
Module courses |
Important Note: You may not take MANGT 470W/MGMT 471W until after you have satisfied all the prerequisites, which are FNC 300/FIN 301, MANGT 300/MGMT 301, SCM 310, MRKTG 300/MKTG 301, and at least 7th-semester standing.
4. In your eighth semester, you should be completing the following:
Supporting Courses |
Module courses |
Other Important Reminders for BLASC students:
-
If you choose the Education Abroad module, start planning early for your program of study abroad. Many programs require that you apply one year in advance of the actual travel date. Some programs may also have prerequisites that you must first complete before studying abroad. You will need to complete 15 credits in a school-approved study abroad program. You should consult with your advisor before you actually enroll in an education abroad program to determine if and where the study abroad courses will fit into your BLASC program requirements. For more information about education abroad, you may see Mr. Mark Bestoso (Room 281G, REDC Building) or Ms. Ruth Pflueger, the Director of the Learning Resource Center (in the Behrend Library). You may also check the Penn State International Education Programs and Studies (IEPS) web site at: https://www.international.psu.edu/ieps/forms/SearchPrograms.asp
-
Many of the modules can lead to minors with relatively little additional course work. If you want to earn one or more minors, make sure you complete a "Declaration of Minor" form.
-
Your actual course schedules will depend on which 3 modules you have chosen. Each module requires 15 credits (the Accounting module requires 16 credits). You should carefully plan ahead to insure that you satisfy any necessary prerequisites and to confirm that the courses you need will be offered. To see a comprehensive list of prerequisites, go to the following School of Business site or refer to the Penn State Bulletin (Blue Book). To see which junior/senior level courses will be offered in the upcoming 2 semesters, refer to the list of tentative course offerings at the front of the "Schedule of Classes" (paper version) distributed by the Registrar's Office every semester.
-
Please consult with your advisor on any questions about the requirements for the BLASC major. A good way to help you track your progress through the program is to follow the recommended academic plan and checksheet .
