SAM AND IRENE BLACK SCHOOL OF BUSINESS Career Paths for Economics Majors Economics majors enjoy career opportunities in business and labor organizations, government, and academia. Economists are employed in every type of business and industry, including manufacturing, utilities, insurance, retailing, finance, and banking. Government at all levels is another major employer of economists. An undergraduate degree in Business Economics also is excellent preparation for law or graduate school. A survey by the National Association of Business Economists (NABE) found that in 2000 the median base salary of an economist was $85,000, with 38 percent of respondents reporting a base salary greater than $100,000. Excellent examples of economics careers, trend forecasts, and salary information are available in Careers in Business Economics, a publication prepared by NABE that can be downloaded free from www.nabe.com.
