Technology Transfer

In the course of engaging in research, School of Engineering faculty often generate ideas and intellectual property (IP) that could initialize the creation of new businesses or enable the development  of new or improved commercial products and services in existing businesses. The School of Engineering collaborates with the College’s Innovation Center to facilitate the transfer of these ideas from academia to the corporate sector in order to foster regional economic development.

School Participation in Technology Transfer:

  • Sponsored Research
Companies can conduct technical transfer projects with the School of Engineering through Sponsored Research. By engaging in this manner, the company can leverage its technical resources by adding   faculty expertise, student interns, and the laboratories to the project in the course of developing new technologies.

  • Technology Licensing
The University patents its intellectual property and advocates the commercialization of its patents.  Interested organizations outside the University may license this technology to help them develop new companies, products, or services. Technology available for licensing has been developed by the School of Engineering. Additional information may be obtained from Penn State's Industrial Research Office.

  • Start-Up Companies
The School of engineering engages in support of start-ups through one of its Applied Research Centers. Support includes services to several faculty start-ups and to external start-ups supported by regional investors. Take a moment to review a description of faculty start-ups or read some current news related to technology transfer.
