2006-2007 Speaker Series
Dr. Kevin Berisso Ohio University RFID in Education April 3, 2007, 12:30 - 1:30 in REDC 002 The Center for Automatic Identification at Ohio University is the country's first educational center dedicated to automatic identification and data capture (AIDC). Ohio University has been teaching and presenting on AIDC topics, including RFID since its inception via workshops and an AIDC course. They recently added an RFID class that is open to all majors (business, engineering, technology, etc.). This presentation will discuss the educational efforts in teaching and research at Ohio University, both internally and externally. For Video Presentation: Click Here
Dr. Nebil Buyurgan (left) Justin R. Chimka (right) University of Arkansas Test Protocol for Read Rate Analysis of RFID Systems for Business Applications March 29, 2007, 12:30 - 1:30 in REDC 002 Radio frequency identification (RFID), with its "revolutionary" applications to today's work environment, receives much attention by government and industry. However, without proper appreciation of RFID potential, capabilities and drawbacks, implementation of the technology will bring unnecessary costs. A major problem facing many companies is not spending adequate time evaluating RFID for their business applications. An important goal should be to better understand applied RFID by answering the question, "What might be affecting system performance?" Studies of operational effectiveness and RFID in controlled environments are being conducted in the AT&T Material Handling Lab at the University of Arkansas to identify system parameters, and acquire some understanding of them and dynamics of their effects on performance. Experiments with RFID systems yield interesting and useful data that, subject to appropriate statistical models, should results in a better practical understanding of the technology. Dr. Marlin H. Mickle University of Pittsburgh RFID: The View from the Inside Out March 22, 2007, 12:30 - 1:30 in REDC 002 The popular subject of RFID is somewhat well known from the supply chain point of view. However, the advantages of RFID are well beyond that of simple track and trace. Great improvements in track and track have been made with bar codes simply by using information concepts applied to RFID. IN order to take advantage of the additional benefits of RFID, it is necessary to understand the physical benefits and limitations that can be used for a total paradigm shift in classical supply chain management, especially when viewed as a two-directional problem. This talk will concern the physical characteristics of conformance and performance as related to all aspects of RF devices applied to industry in general.
