The School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, hosts a panel discussion titled Wind Energy: Outlook, Opportunities, and Impact on the Power Grid on Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. in the Research and Economic Development Center's Samuel P. "Pat" Black Conference Center (REDC 180).

Panelists include: Katie Feeney, Global Warming Policy Analyst, Clean Air Council/NRDC Consultant in Pennsylvania; Tim Vought, Senior Project Developer, Gamesa Energy USA; and Laura Jackson, Chairperson, Save Our Allegheny Ridges. The moderator for the panel is Robert Weissbach, Ph.D., associate professor of engineering at Penn State Behrend.

As the country looks for renewable sources of energy, wind energy is becoming a particularly attractive option. The cost to produce energy using wind turbines is now comparable to that of coal and nuclear power, and the federal government is hoping to have twenty percent of the nation’s electricity provided by wind energy by the year 2030. In this panel discussion, the audience will hear from three presenters providing different perspectives on wind energy. The first panelist will discuss the present/future status of the power grid along with federal energy legislation and how it could create a greater market for wind and therefore create new job opportunities in the wind industry. The second will discuss wind energy as a business from the perspective of a large wind turbine manufacturer. The third panelist will talk about the impact wind energy will have on our lives. A question and answer session supervised by the moderator will follow the panel presentations.
