Mechanical Engineering Technology: Our Mission & Core Values

Our Mission

The Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) program at Penn State Behrend is committed to providing quality education through excellence in teaching, applied research, scholarly activity, and service. The program shall meet its commitment by providing an educational environment where students, faculty, staff, and administration function as a team in pursuit of "value added" excellence. The program environment shall allow personalized student-faculty interaction, promote the development of critical thinking skills, build foundational knowledge in the application of current applied technologies, instill a desire for life long learning, and motivate students to realize their maximum potential.

Core Values

We embrace the following core values that shape the character of our program:

  • We value quality undergraduate education brought about by quality teaching.
  • We value the benefit of doing a few things well and thus commit to maintaining a program focus consistent with available resources and expertise.
  • We value educational enrichment derived from a commitment to maintain technical currency of faculty, facilities and the curriculum.
  • We value the shaping of student character to meet the expectations of society in general for practicing professionals.
  • We value the enhancement of education resulting from a continued student and faculty experience and continued exposure to the industrial environment brought about through senior capstone projects, internships, and involvement in undergraduate applied research.
  • We value the attributes of critical, ethical, decision-making and the desire for life long learning.
  • We value the diversity evident in a global environment and we recognize that diversity is more than ethnic, racial, gender, or religious, but also includes the various professionals that we interface with as engineers which include: management, finance, marketing, engineers of other disciplines, production, union workers, and secretarial.
  • We value the importance of excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills and the benefits derived from working in teams.
  • We value the benefit of continuous improvement that results from the assessment of program objectives and outcomes by our stakeholders.
