ProcessingProcessing:

Penn State Behrend's 10,500-square- foot plastics processing lab is hailed as the most advanced and well-equipped of its kind in the country. Most plastic part manufacturing methods are currently represented in this lab, which was designed to give practical, hands-on experience. The students learn the design and function of the different types of processing equipment. Each student is individually tested on the machines to ensure that the student understands the interdependence of the numerous processing parameters that need to be monitored or adjusted to efficiently manufacture quality plastic parts. Common processing part defects are studied so the student can identify and understand the root causes of each. Statistical methods, which facilitate understanding and optimizing a process, are also implemented. The processing piece of the puzzle gives the knowledge and skill required to launch a successful processing career as well as the background and understanding beneficial toward
any career in plastics.
