SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

Joe Kubany

Hi! My name is Joe Kubany. I am from Peters Township, McMurray, PA, where I graduated from high school in 1996. I received an associates degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Penn State McKeesport and then changed assignment to Penn State Behrend where I received my B.S. in 2000.

I would definitely recommend living on campus because of the strong sense of community. Class is only a five minute walk and you can easily go to the labs at midnight to work while no one else is around. I was particularly impressed by the dedication of the professors. When speaking with other engineers it seems that they did not receive the support from their professors that I did. Many times I would go to a professor's office and the door would be open; they were very willing to help. My advisor even offered to come in on a Saturday to help us work on our senior design projects.

I am currently employed by Dresser-Rand where I work as a Value Engineering Leader. My job is to provide more valuable designs to the customer, where value is defined as function/cost. The FEA classes I took at Behrend really helped me to get a good start. In my first three years with Dresser-Rand I used ANSYS to perform many different types of FEA on various components. The report writing style that Mr. Fisher used was also helpful. Formal and very well documented reports are important when others read your work.
