SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING
Kassie Johnson
Hello, I'm Kassie S. Johnson, a Behrend MET graduate from the class of 2004. I started my college co urses at Penn State McKeesport, where I received the associate degree and then transferred to Behrend to get my baccalaureate. I graduated from McKeesport Area High School in 2000. I am currently employed at Bechtel Bettis Inc. as an associate scientist. I do engineering design from concepts to in-field operations. I also perform research, detailed design of equipment (AutoCAD and PRO/E), structural analysis (ANSYS), alignment studies (GD&T), equipment procurement, operational work procedures, and oversee on-site start-up of equipment operations. I was most impressed with the knowledge of the mechanical engineering technology professors and their interest in wanting me to succeed.
My company was really impressed by my knowledge in computer-aided engineering programs such as: ANSYS, PRO/E, and MathCAD. I was able to start my job and jump right into performing structural analysis. Two other MET program graduates work at Bechtel Bettis: Steve Longwell and George Popelas.
I would recommend living on-campus. It provided me with quick, easy access to the engineering building, and as an engineer you will spend lots of time in the labs. I would also suggest getting involved in on campus engineering organization, such as: Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Association of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), or National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). These organizations help to build leadership and positive involvement in the community.
