Almy Hall Living and Learning Center To live in Almy Hall at Penn State Erie is to be a member of a close-knit residential community. The facility houses students in the Honors and Scholars programs as well as a limited number of other students who desire such a living arrangement. The Almy community is composed of students in their first through senior years, facilitating mentoring relationships. The center was named in honor of sailing master Thomas C. Almy, commander of the schooner Somers during the War of 1812, maintaining Penn State Erie's theme of naming residence halls for people and ships involved in the Battle of Lake Erie. The lodge-style building is organized around single-sex suites for four students, each with two bedrooms and shared common and bath/dressing areas. A large meeting area and lounge serves as the social and intellectual focus of the residence, and a gathering place for special programming, speakers, and events. Additional meeting and group study rooms and a small computer facility are available. Almy Hall residents have the opportunity to meet visiting faculty, speakers, and other guests of the College who stay in a Scholar-In-Residence Apartment. Almy Hall Residents All students who choose to live in Almy Hall sign an agreement to respect quiet study policies set by the residents. Approximately 80 percent of the living space in Almy Hall is reserved for students in the Penn State Behrend Honors Program and the Scheyer Scholars Program, with the remainder open to all students. Space for first-year Honors students is limited and is awarded on the basis of the student's acceptance to the Honors or Scholars Program and the date the individual's housing contract and deposit are received. Current students in good standing in the Honors or Scholars Programs have priority for Honors spaces. Other students are awarded spaces on a first-come, first-served basis. Almy Hall offers a living and learning environment which fosters academic excellence, out-of-classroom intellectual and social pursuits, and the formation of mentor relationships and study groups. Residents have the opportunity to celebrate their membership in an Honors community by participating in established traditions and creating new ones.
