Women's Film Series Schedule for Spring 2008
The Women's Film Series 2008 is sponsored by the Mary Behrend Cultural Fund and Student Activity Fee
VOLVER (2004) Pedro Almodovar, Spain
March 25, 2008
Reed Lecturer Hall Room 117 @ 7:00 p.m.
Volver is a meeting of Mildred Pierce and Arsenic and Old Lace, combined with the surrealistic naturalism of my fourth film, ¿Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto!! (What have I done to Deserve This?), that is, Madrid and its lively working-class neighbourhoods, where the immigrants from the various Spanish provinces share dreams, lives and fortune with a multitude of ethnic groups and other races. At the heart of this social framework, three generations of women survive wind, fire and even death, thanks to goodness, audacity and a limitless vitality.
After the Wedding (2007) Susanne Bier, Denmark
April 1, 2008
Reed Lecturer Hall Room 117 @ 7:00 p.m.
Acclaimed director Susanne Bier returns with her most powerful film yet, the Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Language Film, AFTER THE WEDDING. Far from home, Jacob (Casino Royale villain, Mads Mikkelsen), runs a struggling orphanage in one India’s poorest regions. Desperate to save the orphanage from closure, he returns to Denmark to meet Jorgen (Rolf Lassgard) a wealthy businessman and potential benefactor. Jorgen offers Jacob a seemingly innocent invitation to attend his daughter’s wedding. What appears to be nothing more than a friendly gesture sets in motion an increasingly devastating series of surprises, revelations, and confessions that will forever change their lives. Sweeping, yet entirely intimate, AFTER THE WEDDING is a shattering portrait of a family struggling with the fragility of life and the search for connection, healing, and forgiveness.
