Guidelines for Placing Items on
Reserve at the Library
|
I. SUBMISSION OF RESERVE LISTS
|
|
|
A. DEADLINE
|
|
Items to be placed on reserve
should be submitted to the library two weeks prior
to student use to allow for acquiring copyright
permission if necessary and for working with the
on-line circulation system. If needed,
additional items may be added throughout the
semester.
|
B. SELECTING PAPER OR
ELECTRONIC:
|
|
Reserve services are available
in two forms: traditional
paper reserves or electronic reserves.
Which service is selected may vary depending on
the materials needed for reserve.
Two main criteria govern which type of reserve
is selected:
|
|
|
|
A.
Faculty preference
B.
Format in which the libraries own the materials
|
|
|
On occasion the second of the
two criteria will override the first.
A publisher may not grant rights to digitize an
item for reserve use, or will request an unreasonable
royalty amount. Under
these circumstances, the paper copy will be placed on
reserve. Or
if the item is available in electronic databases such
as ProQuest or JSTOR, then the library will link to
this item for the reserve.
|
C. SUBMITTING RESERVE LISTS
|
|
All items must be recorded on
a reserve form.
A paper form is available
for print reserves on the library's web
page or by requesting one from the library.
An
electronic form is available for electronic reserves on the library's web page.
For books, we need the title, author and call
number. The
library will pull the items from the shelves for you.
The library will purchase any
books that are needed for reserve.
Only Penn State University Libraries' books
or the faculty member's personal copy of a book will
be placed on reserve.
Books from non-PSU libraries will not be placed
on reserve.
For personal items, we need
the name for each item.
Please designate the type of reserve.
If type of reserve is not noted, then all items
will be place on TWO-HOUR CLOSED RESERVE.
A maximum of one copy of an item for every 25 students
enrolled in the course will be placed on reserve.
Any
type of loose items (journal articles, homework
solutions, problems, etc.) should be placed in a
three-ring binder. If you do not have a binder, the library will
provide one for you.
|
D.
CIRCULATION PERIODS
|
|
Circulation periods for items
on traditional reserve are usually two hours.
The reserve system does allow variations to
this loan period.
If you prefer a different loan period, please
check with the library for the different options
available.
Electronic reserve items are
accessible by course name, number, or faculty name.
At the end of the semester,
any materials belonging to the faculty member will be
returned to the owner.
Books owned by the libraries will be returned
to their appropriate locations. Electronic items
will be suppressed and archived.
