SPRING 2008 Final Exam Information

A limited number of paper copies of the fall final examination schedule will be available in the College Registrar's office, 12 Erie Hall, and at the information desk in the Reed Union Building.  The most up-to-date information regarding final exams will be found online.  The final exam period will begin on Monday, May 5, and will end on Friday, May 9.  Students and faculty should not make plans to leave campus until after they review the final exam schedule. Final exams must be taken as scheduled except for direct or overload conflict situations.

Final examinations fulfill two important academic objectives: student integration of instructional material and end-of-semester evaluation of student achievement. However, valid means other than the final examination also accomplish these objectives (e.g., term paper, final project report, take-home examination, etc.). Course instructors determine which of these methods is best.

In addition, course instructors are expected to:

  • Offer a full schedule of instruction.

  • Schedule no examinations during the last week of classes. (Quizzes and narrowly limited tests may be given.)

  • Schedule final examinations during the established final examination period.

  • When a final examination is not required, request the submission of an alternative means no earlier than the first day of the final examination period.

Conflict Exam Information

There are two types of conflict exams, direct and overload. A direct conflict occurs when two exams are scheduled at the same time. Students with a direct conflict must file for a conflict exam. Overload exams are three or more exams scheduled within one calendar day or three consecutive exams. Students may elect to take the overload if they wish.  Students wishing to file for a conflict exam must do so electronically by using the Final Exam Conflict form by March 9, 2008.

Students were able to file for a spring 2008 conflict examination until Sunday, March 9, 2008. The Penn State Behrend's Registrar's Office will resolve conflicts filed by March 9, and notify students of resolutions. After the March 9 deadline, students must resolve conflicts with their instructors.

Evening Exams

The scheduling of evening examinations in any course offered before 5:30 p.m. is permitted only when all of the following conditions are fulfilled:

  • Consent is granted by the dean of the college in which the course is taught.

  • Not more than four evening examinations are scheduled during the semester.

  • The evening examinations are scheduled in advance by the Registrar's office and announced by the professor during the first week of classes.

In the case of a conflict between the evening examination and other scheduled University activities, or in the case of more than one evening examination per day, each student is permitted to make up the examination without penalty.
