Undergraduate Research Opportunities in Biology

Student on rocks near waterPenn State Behrend offers its students the opportunity to engage in significant research projects while in their undergraduate studies.

Research requires that the student develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Students often comment on how much better they understand what has been taught in the classroom now that they are actually applying their knowledge to answer questions in biology. Students with research experience have a very competitive edge upon graduation whether the student is interested in applying for jobs, graduate schools, or professional schools.

There are many research projects that are being conducted by current students, under the guidance and mentorship of our research-oriented faculty. Students who are interested in pursing a research project are encouraged to visit the faculty and discuss the research projects in their respective laboratories.

Students involved in research during their undergraduate careers have presented their research at national meetings, have published papers in peer-reviewed journals, and have been recognized nationally for excellence in research through award of research grants and multiple offers for graduate school and/or employment.

Penn State Behrend student Melinda Hanes was awarded a American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) Undergraduate Fellowship for 2002.
