Nick, Behrend Building
Renovations Benefit Students
More construction projects are under way for
the 2000-2001 academic year.
Nick 74, the last of the old biology
teaching laboratories, and two preparation and experiment
rooms, will be gutted and renovated this summer. The new
facility will consist of a modern introductory biology
laboratory, a research laboratory, an aquarium room, and two
offices. It will provide state-of-the-art teaching space for
the introductory biology courses, including access to
computer instruction at every lab bench. The research
space will ease space pressures on the growing biology
faculty.
This summer will also see renovation of the
Otto Behrend Science Building. The entire building
will be air-conditioned, and classrooms will get new
lighting, ceilings, and, in some cases, floors. Chemistry,
physics, and geoscience laboratories will also be spruced up
with new paint, lighting, and ceilings, plus repair of the
laboratory furniture.
Finally, we greatly look forward to the
construction of the Mehalso Observatory (also this summer),
which is described in an accompanying news item. The new
telescope and dome will be placed about 50 feet from the
present dome, which has been a landmark on the campus for
more than twenty years. With two telescopes in domes,
Behrend will have first-rate facilities for class and public
observing events, and for student research.
