Scholarship Opportunities at Penn State Behrend

Scholarship winner

Penn State Behrend offers an array of scholarship opportunities to its first-year and upper-division students. Scholarships are awarded based on a variety of criteria including academic merit, leadership potential, and financial need.

How do I apply for scholarships at Penn State Behrend?

First year and upper division students are automatically considered for most academic scholarships offered at Penn State Behrend. All students are encouraged to review our "quick fact sheet" about scholarship awarding at Penn State Behrend.

We do award several scholarships that give priority to students who work or whose parents work for various area employers; these scholarships do require students to complete an application

In addition, we offer leadership scholarships that are based on extracurricular involvement and leadership potential.

All students are also considered for University-wide scholarships.

Do I have to show financial need to qualify for scholarships at Penn State Behrend?

About 50 percent of our academic scholarships have, in addition to merit, a secondary criterion of financial need. To qualify for scholarships that also require financial need, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA should be completed as soon as possible after January 1 (prior to upcoming fall semester enrollment). For merit-only academic scholarships, completion of the FAFSA is not required.

If I am awarded a Penn State Behrend scholarship, how and when will I be notified?

First year students are considered for scholarships shortly after they are offered admission to Penn State Behrend. All first year scholarship notifications are made by mid-March (prior to fall enrollment). Upper division students are notified during the summer months. Only students selected for scholarships are notified.

Are there special scholarship opportunities available to students in the Schreyer Scholars or Behrend Honors programs?

Most first year students selected to join the Schreyer Scholars Program will receive four-year renewable awards between $2,000 and $3,000 per academic year. This highly selective program requires excellent SAT scores and high school performance. Students may be considered for admission to the Schreyer Scholars Program after their freshman year; however, scholarships are not guaranteed.

Students may also be selected to join the Penn State Behrend Honors Program. Although being a member of the Honors Program does not guarantee scholarship funds, many of the Penn State Behrend scholarships give priority to students who are members of the Schreyer Scholars or Honors programs.

Specific questions regarding the Schreyer Scholars and Honors Program at Penn State Behrend should be directed to the Learning Resource Center, Penn State Erie, 5091 Station Road, Erie, PA 16563 or 814-898-6140.

Who awards Penn State Behrend scholarships?

The Penn State Behrend Faculty Council Scholarship and Awards Committee awards most of the scholarships at Penn State Behrend. Some scholarships are awarded directly by academic departments and the Office of Student Aid.

Chancellor's Scholarship Program

Penn State Behrend offers The Chancellor's Scholarship Program to recognize our most academically gifted students. This prestigious scholarship program recognizes students with four-year academic scholarships ranging from $6,000 to $20,000. These scholars are also guaranteed a one-time $1,000 scholarship to study abroad and $1,200 per year in undergraduate research grant funds; offered admission to the Behrend Honors Program; and offered the opportunity to live in Almy Hall, a special on-campus living-learning center for students undertaking honors study.

Students are considered for this program automatically when they are admitted to Penn State Behrend. Most students offered a Chancellor's Scholarship have grade point averages above 3.5/4.0 and a minimum SAT score of 1350.

Leadership Scholarships

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, awards leadership scholarships that offer both financial assistance and the opportunity for personalized leadership development training.

A separate Leadership Scholarship Application is required for this opportunity.  Applicants are selected based on their high school and life leadership experiences and potential for being student leaders at Penn State Behrend.

Each Leadership Scholarship recipient participates in the Student Affairs Leadership Institute, where they learn about college resources, personal and organizational leadership skills, and have the opportunity to meet members of the Council of Fellows, other regional leaders, and friends of the College, who share their own leadership opportunities. The Leadership Institute is an individually focused organization designed to offer the scholarship recipients the opportunity to shape the organization—and, in turn, their own leadership potential—from the beginning.

Lawrence and Elizabeth Held Scholarship Program

Students enrolled in a major within the Sam and Irene Black School of Business and who have accepted admission into the Schreyer Honors College will be guaranteed the equivalent of full-time, Pennsylvania resident tuition and mandatory fees.  The Lawrence and Elizabeth Held Scholarship, in combination with other grants and scholarships, will be adjusted to remain within a gift aid allowance equivalent to full-time, Pennsylvania resident tuition and mandatory fees.

Requirements for consideration include:

  • Full-time enrollment
  • Declared major within the Sam and Irene Black School of Business
  • Enrollment in the Schreyer Honors College
  • Completion of the 2008-09 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 1, 2008

Students are automatically considered for this program if they have met the above requirements; no application is necessary.  Requirements for renewal include maintaining a grade point average of 3.33 or higher each semester; continued enrollment in a major within the Sam and Irene Black School of Business; and continued membership in the Schreyer Honors College.

PHEAA's New Economy Technology Scholarship Program

Pennsylvania has an exciting scholarship initiative called New Economy Scholarship Program. Sophomore-level students with at least a 3.0 grade point average and pursuing degrees in the physical sciences, computer-related curricula, engineering, or engineering technology are eligible for consideration.  An internship is required, and students must work in Pennsylvania for each year they receive the scholarship or it will revert to a loan. Most students qualify for $3,000 per year.
