Penn State Behrend Baseball Announces Team Awards for 2007

The Penn State Behrend Lions  baseball program released the team's award winners for the 2007 campaign.

The players and coaches selected Josh Fyffe (Fredonia/
Sharpsville) as the team's MVP and Rookie of the Year. Fyffe led the team in hitting all season and posted a .394 average (56 for 142) with a team-high nine doubles and 33 RBIs. He also hit three home runs and stole ten bases in twelve attempts, while playing stellar defense at shortstop as a freshman.

Senior Mike Stetz (Johnstown/Bishop McCort) was picked as the top defensive player on the team and earned the program's golden glove award for the second straight year. He was also tabbed as the Leadership/Scholarship Award winner. Stetz had previously earned the team MVP (2005) and the Spirit and Hustle Award (2004).

The pitching staff was again the strength of the Behrend Lions this season. David Koerbel (Pittsburgh/Central Catholic) was named the team's Most Valuable Pitcher. He logged a 2.87 ERA and struck out 55 hitters in 53.1 innings of work while completing four games. He walked only 14 hitters and limited the opposition to a .216 batting average. Koerbel, a sophomore who was named the 2006 AMCC Newcomer of the Year, is 9-1 in two seasons for the blue and white.

The Most Improved Player for 2007 was Zachary Sullivan (Oil City/Oil City). Sullivan hit .333 with six RBIs in 21 games for the blue and white improving upon his .189 average from the year before.

Sophomore David Miller (St. Marys/St. Marys) was selected as the Spirit and Hustle Award winner. He came to play hard every day, supported his teammates, and caught fire towards the end of the season finishing up with a five-for-eight performance to close out the 2007 season. Miller hit a home run, had 11 RBIs and was four-for-four in stolen bases.

"We are fortunate to have a group of high-quality young men in our program," said head coach Paul Benim. "These honors are essentially disseminated by their peers and this group should be very honored." Behrend finished 27-12 overall this spring and 12-6 in the AMCC.
