Ruffo Places Sixty-Third at NCAA Cross Country Championships

Penn State Behrend’s Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex) finished 63 out of 211 runners on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan.  The Behrend Lions junior finished with a time of 26:53 and is the first runner ever from Behrend to compete at the National Championships.

In order to be eligible to participate in the championship, teams and individuals  qualified in their respective NCAA regions.  Twenty-four teams of seven men each were selected to participate in the championships.  The top teams from each of the eight regions automatically qualified. Additional at-large berths were awarded based on the following formula: The regions with the first sixteen finishers in the previous year's championship were awarded the additional berths, with no region receiving more than five berths.

Forty-seven individuals were selected to participate in the championships. All regions automatically qualified the first four individuals not on a team. Additional at-large berths were awarded to those regions with the first fifteen in previous year's championships.

Ruffo was named the 2005 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) runner of the year after finishing first at the AMCC Championships on October 29 and finishing 12 out 277 runners at the NCAA Regional on November 12.  Ruffo’s showing completes a strong season for him individually and the Behrend men’s cross country program.
