Cross Country Concludes Season at Mid East Regionals

Penn State Behrend men's and women's cross country finished up their seasons on Saturday, November 11 when they traveled to Waynesburg to compete at the Mid East Regionals.  The men finished 20th out of 45 teams with a combined score of 581 while the women came in at 25th in a field of 47 with a score of 721.  Winning the event was Haverford for the men and Dickinson on the the women's side.

Pacing the Behrend men was Brad Ruffo (West Middlesex/West Middlesex), who finished in 28:19, putting him at 68th.  Ruffo concludes a remarkable career at Behrend in which he placed first among Behrend men in every race he competed in over his four-year span.  Ruffo was the first Behrend runner to qualify for NCAA Nationals, a feat he accomplished last season as a junior.

Also having a strong showing for the men was freshman Kevin Gorny (Erie/McDowell).  Gorny placed 84th overall, finishing the course in 28:42 and was named to the Mid East Region All-Freshman Team.  Other finishers for the men included Andy Marshall (Brunswick, OH/Brunswick) crossing in at 29:12 and Andy Iams (Harrison City/Penn Trafford) with a time of 29:57.

The women were again led by Jenny Bailey (Corry/Corry), who placed 39th with a time of 25:05.  Bailey wraps up a sophomore campaign that had her finish first among Behrend women in every race and earn a spot on the AMCC All-Conference team.  Also competing for the women were Willa Paterson (Woodward/Penns Valley) (26:51), Leisl Soergel (27:45), and Lisa Brozewicz (29:03).

Many of the cross county runners will now look ahead to the track and field season.  Indoor track and field is scheduled to begin on January 27.
