1995 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees


DIANE METZGAR DOANE  

Diane Metzgar Doane was an outstanding basketball player at Villa Maria High School and at Penn State Behrend.  As the starting point guard in 1981-82, her passing led the team to the NAIA District 18 Women's Basketball Championship.  Doane went on to dish out over three hundred assists in three seasons, which still ranks second on the all-time charts.

Doane was much more than a passer, she also put the ball in the hoop.  She still holds the record for the most points scored in a single game with 33.  In addition, her career scoring average of 13.1 points per game ranks fourth in the all-time records.

A three-year starter, she was named to the District 18 All-Star squad in each of her seasons.  Doane also holds the number two spot in three other offensive categories.  She earned 210 career steals, carried a career free-throw percentage of 75, and distributed eleven assists in a game, second best in a single game.

 

Doane, a former teacher, is at home in Pittsburgh raising her two daughters.

 

PAUL HEASLEY 

 

Paul Heasley, a 1980 graduate of Penn State Behrend, led head coach Herb Lauffer's soccer teams to two consecutive postseason appearances.  Heasley poured in 26 goals during his two-season stay in the blue, white, and red uniform, to become the all-time leading point scorer in Penn State Behrend soccer history.

 

Heasley totaled 59 career points, which ties him with Hall of Famer Jim Channas for the number one position.  In both 1978 and 1979, Heasley earned all-star awards for his outstanding play.  In 1979, his 12 goals contributed heavily to the team's success as Penn State Behrend captured the NAIA District 18 Soccer Championship.

 

Heasley earned his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Penn State.  He has been teaching for over 25 years, and is currently a teacher at Danville Area High School.

 

DeETTE BACON HERING 

 

DeEtte Bacon Hering was a powerful volleyball player at Penn State Behrend for three consecutive seasons for head coach Jan Wilson.  This Fort LeBouf High School product concluded her banner season in 1982 with 346 kills, still the second  most kills in a season for a Penn State Behrend player.

 

For her prowess, Hering garnered first team District 18 All-Star status in 1981 and 1982.  She was named to the Women's Keystone Conference All-Star squad in 1982.  She finished her career with 648 kills, fourth best on the all-time charts.

 

Hering always "served" her team well.  In 1982, Hering earned 77 serving aces, and her team went on to win 22 matches.  This is the second most serving aces in a single season.  Hering ended her career with 130 serving aces, fifth on the career charts.

Hering is now a home health care attendant for Parke V. Phillips in Waterford.

 

DUANE MAY 

 

Duane May came to Penn State Behrend from Harbor Creek High School, where he had been an outstanding athlete.  At Behrend, he immediately impressed basketball coach Roger Sweeting with his work ethic and conditioning.  As a freshman, he had a single game high of 38 points.

 

As a sophomore, May was a starting forward and co-captain of the 1968-69 team that finished the season undefeated at 20-0, still the only undefeated basketball team in the College's forty-plus seasons of varsity competition.  That year he averaged over 15 PPG in a very balanced attack, and was also among the rebounding leaders with over 11 per game.  His career scoring average, 17.4 PPG, still ranks him ninth among career leaders.

Additionally, May was a gifted golfer.  He earned two varsity letters while both teams had solid winning records.  May also earned the White Letter Award as most valuable team member for his contributions.

 

May completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas where he earned a five-year degree in Pharmacy.  He is now a registered pharmacist in Houston.

 

GERRY SIMON 

 

Simon, a 1977 graduate of Mount Lebanon High School, earned four varsity letters for baseball at Penn State Behrend under longtime coach Shorty Stoner.

 

As a senior, Simon captained the team to a school record twenty wins.  As an outstanding defensive catcher, his offensive numbers proved to be equally strong.  He hit .311 with 3 home runs and 27 RBI's as the team captured the school's first NAIA District 18 Baseball Championship.

 

Simon's bright career permanently left his mark on the Penn State Behrend baseball program.  He is the all-time leader in career hits with 128.  Simon also holds the record for most hits in a single season with 42 in 1980.  In 1979, he hit a career best .432, and in 1980 he followed with a sharp .429.  His efforts won him the White Letter Award in both seasons, emblematic of the MVP award.

 

Simon is a 1982 graduate of Penn State Behrend, and was twice a member of the dean's list. He is currently an attorney-at-law in Pittsburgh.

 

MINDY STASENKO

 

Mindy Stasenko was the first women's basketball player at Penn State Behrend to score 1,000 points.  Missy, her sister, and fellow inductee, was the second.  Mindy finished her career with 1,035 career points, still fourth highest in women's basketball at Penn State Behrend.She averaged 14.0 points per game for her career, second best all-time.

 

Stasenko was named to the District 18 All-Star team four times.  In her memorable season of 1982-83, she averaged 16.8 PPG and 10.6 RPG.  She concluded the year with a shooting percentage of .587, which ranked her eighth in the NAIA national charts.
 

Stasenko also earned dean's list honors six times as a student-athlete.  In 1984-85, Stasenko received the John Zahniser Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award.  She also played softball in 1985 and her natural athletic ability helped her achieve District 18 All-Star honors on the diamond.  Stasenko now lives in Pittsburgh where she is an assistant supervisor of funds in the accounting operations at Mellon Bank.

 

MISSY STASENKO 

 

Missy Stasenko and her twin sister Mindy proved to be two of the best basketball players in Penn State Behrend women's basketball history.  Missy was an impressive player who scored 1,057 points in her career, which still ranks third on the all-time charts.

 

In the 1981-82 season, she averaged 11.5 points per game and 3.6 rebounds per game, as the team won the NAIA District 18 Championship.  She earned All-Star honors on the District 18 team for her performance.  Stasenko gave her best performance in 1984-85.  She scored 388 points, averaged 18.5 PPG, and pulled down a career high 8.6 RPG during that season.  Stasenko was named to the Women's Keystone Conference All-Star squad for her outstanding play.

 

Stasenko was known as a superb dual sport athlete at Penn State Behrend, and was named to the District 18 All-Star teams in basketball and softball for three straight seasons.  Her free-throw percentage of .725 left a mark in the fourth spot for a career, while her 272 assists are third most in Penn State Behrend's women's basketball history.

Stasenko earned her bachelor's degree in 1985 and is a defined contribution specialist for Mellon Bank in Pittsburgh.
