Penn State Behrend announced the six members of the 2007 Hall of Fame Class: Angela (Georg) Gorman, Dr. Lara (Herrmann) Kauffman, David Koster, Sue Mazur, Quinn McGuire, and Cherie (Varrassa) Stadler. These individuals are being recognized for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to the College by inducting them into the Behrend Lions Athletic Hall of Fame. This will be the sixteenth class inducted by the College since establishing the Hall of Fame in 1991. The Hall of Fame currently has 94 individuals and ten teams as members, and is sponsored by the Behrend Lions Athletic Association. ANGELA (GEORGE) GORMAN Angela (Georg) Gorman (1994-97) was an outstanding four-year letter winning volleyball player for the Behrend Lions. From the setter position, Gorman guided the blue and white to new heights. She helped the Behrend Lions establish a school record for wins with 27 during her rookie season under legendary Head Coach Jan Wilson. Then as a charter member of the AMCC in 1997, Gorman was selected as the league's Most Valuable Player after leading Behrend to the AMCC regular-season title. At the conclusion of Gorman's career, she ranked number-one all-time for single-season assists with 1,075 and for career assists with 3,100, while breaking Hall of Famer Pam Allshoue's record for career assists. She also finished ranked first on the all-time charts for games played with 453, second all-time in career digs with 759, and fourth for service aces with 153. Gorman, a Windber High School graduate, also played for the Behrend women’s basketball team in the 1997-98 season and helped the team reach a 19-9 mark, while also earning a berth into the ECAC Tournament. DR. LARA (HERRMANN) KAUFFMAN Lara (Herrmann) Kauffman (1995-97) has been instrumental in the great success of the Penn State Behrend women’s soccer program. During Kauffman’s three seasons in uniform, she guided the blue and white to an impressive 35-15 mark during its first three years of varsity competition. Playing for Head Coach Dan Perritano, she led the offensive attack from the midfield by scoring points and distributing the ball. Kauffman’s numbers on the all-time leader board are superior. When her career concluded, her name was permanently etched into the record books. She was the program’s all-time leader in career points with 52, and goals with 22. Kauffman ranked second for single-season points with 22 and goals with 10, while also ranking on the assists column. In her final season of play, Kauffman led the Behrend Lions to the first-ever AMCC Soccer Championship in 1997, while also earning all-conference honors. In addition, the McDowell High School product, was named Behrend’s Female Athlete of the Year as Behrend advanced to the ECAC Tournament. DAVID KOSTER David Koster (1994-97) excelled as a member of the Behrend Lions golf team under the leadership of late Hall of Fame Coach Herb Lauffer. Koster, a Harborcreek High School graduate, had a passion for the game of golf. Nobody got in more rounds of practice each year than Koster. He wanted to be a high-quality player and worked hard to achieve his craft. In 1994, Koster became the golf program’s first-ever ECAC qualifier and competed at Saratoga Springs, New York. A year later he finished seventh in the City Championship. Koster, who won the Edinboro University Fall Invitational at Riverside after carding a round of 71 which included a hole-in-one, also captured individual medalist titles at Pitt-Bradford and Washington and Jefferson. Koster, the 1997 Behrend Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, is only the third golfer in seventeen years to be enshrined into the Penn State Behrend Athletic Hall of Fame. SUE MAZUR Sue Mazur (1992-95) was an impact player for the softball squad, and a four-year starter at third base for the Behrend Lions after graduating from North Allegheny High School. Mazur was a team captain and named to the ECAC All-Star team. She was an integral part of the college’s most successful four years of softball as she led the team to back-to-back ECAC Championships, a runner-up finish, and another ECAC berth, while the team defeated nationally ranked opponents while attaining the program’s highest regional and national rankings and set the school record for wins. At the conclusion of her illustrious career she was the program’s leader in hits with 127, RBI with 79, singles, sacrifices, putouts, and triples. Mazur, was also an amazing defensive player, and remains second all-time for defensive assists. Mazur, who is a career .309 batter and ranks third all-time for games played with 141, led the blue and white to the winningist four-year period of Behrend softball history after her team worked for a 104-42 mark during her career. QUINN MCGUIRE While playing four-years of baseball at Behrend, speedster Quinn McGuire (1994-97) left a lot of people in his dust. McGuire, a Shaler High School product, will always be remembered for being a baserunning stalwart and for passing former Behrend graduate and major leaguer Tom Lawless in several offensive statistical categories. McGuire remains the program’s all-time leader in career stolen bases with 80, and its single-season record holder with 30. McGuire was a change agent for the baseball program and led the team to its second most wins in school history and its most wins in 15 years. Based on his effort, McGuire and the team were ranked nationally for stolen bases as the program began to turn the corner and embark on its most successful decade in baseball history. McGuire, was named the 1995-96 Behrend Lions Male Athlete of the Year. At the conclusion of his great career McGuire ranked first all-time in games played with 124, and at-bats with 397. He also ranked second all-time for career hits with 126, and third in runs scored with 78, while batting .317. CHERIE (VARRASSA) STADLER Cherie (Varrassa) Stadler (1992-95) is one of the best pitchers to ever sport a Behrend Lions uniform on the softball diamond. Stadler, a Corry High School graduate, led from the circle while serving as the crucial ingredient to the program achieving a regional ranking of number-two, and a national ranking of sixteen. The two-time All-ECAC, All-Region, and All-NSCA Academic All-American, was at her best when it mattered the most, annually defeating national ranked teams. As her team set the school record for wins in back-to-back seasons, she led the team to four straight ECAC Tournament appearances including a pair of titles. Stadler was a part of three no-hitters in her career and was the all-time leader in wins in a career with 42, ERA at 1.18, complete games with 47, games started, appearances, innings pitched, strike-outs, and shut-outs in a single-season and career. Stadler, who was ranked nationally for wins and ERA, led her team to a very special 1993 season. She posted a 15-2 mark, with a minuscule 1.18 ERA, while walking only 12 batters in 112.3 innings pitched as the team set a school record for wins with 29, and posted the fourth best winning percentage in all of Division III. |
