Behrend Hordych and Laver Named to
Mid-Atlantic All-Region Team The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team is still earning national attention for their record-breaking 2003 season. This week senior captains Andy Laver (Erie/McDowell) and Jake Hordych (North East/North East) were named to the 2003 Mid-Atlantic Division III Second-Team by the National Soccer Coaches All-America Committee. "This is a tremendous and well-deserved honor for Andy and Jake," said 2003 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference coach of the year Dan Perritano. Jake Hordych, a goalkeeper, set a new record for shut-outs with nine and finished his career at Behrend with 19.5. Hordych was named to the AMCC first-team this year and was named to the AMCC second team in 2002 and 2001. Andy Laver was the dominating force in the midfield this year for the blue and white. He was at the top of his game this season climbing up the record books and earning national attention for his abilities. He tied his season high goal count with ten and added six assists. Laver was named to the 2003 and 2002 AMCC first-team and was voted the 2003 league Player of the Year. Laver was also recognized by his teammates as the 2003 Most Valuable Player. The Behrend men had a phenomenal season in 2003 setting a school record for wins grabbing 14 this year. The blue and white took the AMCC Championship title in November when they defeated Frostburg 1-0. Laver had the winning goal for Behrend and Hordych posted the shut-out. The blue and white then advanced to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in school history but were defeated by the 2002 defending National Champions Messiah College, by a score of 3-0.
