Men's Soccer Captures Herb Lauffer Championship

The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team won the 2005 Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament title with a 2-1 win over Washington & Jefferson (1-1). Penn State Behrend (2-0) senior Brian Blaszczyk (Erie/Mercyhurst Prep) got Behrend going at the 22:00 minute mark before Isen Scholze (Champaign, IL/Champaign) came off the bench for an unassisted goal to spark the squad to victory.

"We are very pleased with our performances in our two games this weekend," said head coach Dan Perritano. "Beating a solid W & J team in the finals was good preparation for our upcoming games." Behrend sophomore Rob Milani (McMurray/Peters Township) was named the tournament MVP for his outstanding defensive play.

The consolation game featured Baldwin-Wallace winning 3-0 over Juniata. Behrend advanced to the championship game after an easy 3-1 win over Juniata on Saturday. Brent Gailey (Beaver/Beaver) started the scoring early seven minutes into to the game off a nice cross by Mark Cipriani (Erie/Cathedral Prep). D.J. Craven hit the net on an unassisted goal at 34:08 to make it 2-0 before Juniata cut into the lead six plus minutes into the second period. Behrend's Marcus Taylor ( Landisville/Landisville) iced the game with a goal at the 86:34 mark.

The blue and white host Alfred State on Wednesday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m. on the Behrend Fields. Then Westminster travels to Erie on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference battle.
