Men's Soccer Open's Season With Impressive Win Over D'Youville
The Behrend Lions could not wait for the 2007 season to begin, and it showed Saturday when Behrend jumped to a 3-0 lead over the Spartans in just a blink of an eye. Senior Adam Cline (Jefferson Hills/Thomas Jefferson) connected off a sweet header from David Baleno (Pittsburgh/Plum) one minute eighteen seconds into the contest. Then Jerry Tortella (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) and Ahmad Salim (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) hooked each other up with assists as Behrend took a commanding 3-0 lead with only six minutes off the clock. Behrend went on to tally an 11-0 win in the semifinals of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament on the Behrend Fields. Salim and Tortella added additional first-half goals. Additional goals were scored by Makr DelGreco (Pittsburgh/Seton LaSalle), Eric Murillo (Pittsburgh/Montour), Lance Sabol (North Huntingdon/Irwin) and Ryan Banks (Allison Park/Hampton) had a pair. In goal Matthew Zirnsak (Butler/Butler) and Dustin Walker (Apollo/Kiski) combined for the shutout. On Sunday, September 2, Penn State Behrend will battle Baldwin-Wallace in the 12 noon championship game on the Behrend Fields. B-W was a 4-1 winner over St. Vincent in the first men's game of the day. Behrend captured Herb Lauffer Memorial Soccer Tournament titles in both 2004 and 2005. Back to Men's Soccer
