Soccer Set to Play in NCAA Tournament Against W & J on Wednesday


The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team captured the AMCC Championship, defeating the number-one seeded Medaille Mavericks 2-1 in overtime to advance to the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

On Monday, at 11:45 a.m. Tournament seedings were announced. Behrend will travel to Washington, PA, to meet the  Washington & Jefferson Presidents on Wednesday, November 7, at 6:00 p.m.

W & J enters the game with a 12-5-3 record, but lost 6-1 earlier in the season to Behrend. The winner will advance to battle second-round host Montclair State (17-2-1) on November 10. 

In 2003 Behrend made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The blue and white earned a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament and squared off against the defending national champions in the second-round, losing 3-0.

After losing a pair of 1-0 games in late September, Behrend has rallied. Coach Dan  Perritano's charges have put together a nine game streak that features an impressive 8-0-1 mark.

Historically, the men's program have won four conference titles and have appeared in eight of the eleven AMCC Championship contests.  The men are 13-4-3 overall and finished 7-2 in AMCC conference play.  On the road in 2007, Behrend is 5-2-2 and 1-0 at neutral sites.

Leading the Behrend attack is sophomore forward Jerry Tortella (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) with 16 goals and 34 season points, while junior midfielder Ahmad Salim (Cranberry/Seneca Valley) has 11 goals and three assists on the year. Between the pipes sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Walker (Apollo/Kiski) has been outstanding. He presents a 0.37 GAA average, limiting the opposition to five goals in 14 games while making 63 saves.
