Behrend Lions Drop W & J 1-0 to Advance in NCAA Tournament

On Wednesday night, Behrend dropped Washington & Jefferson 1-0 in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament.

Behrend's sophomore Jerry Tortella (Pittsburgh/Thomas Jefferson) scored at the 68:56 mark off a pass from Mike Seth (Pittsburgh/Baldwin) to propel the Behrend Lions to the win. Tortella's goal was number 17 on the season establishing a new single-season record eclipsing the mark of 16 set by Dennis Grace in 1973.

In goal Behrend's Dustin Walker (Apollo/Kiski Area) made three saves and combined with the defense to post its twelfth shutout of the season. W & J closed out the year at 12-7-3.

Behrend moves on to face Montclair State on the road this Saturday, November 10 in New Jersey. Montclair earned a first-round bye after posting a 17-2-1 mark this season and has won eight New Jersey Athletic Conference championships. They enter the tournament with a 2-6-1 all-time mark in NCAA play.

After capturing the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship with a 2-1 overtime win over Medaille, Behrend earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. With the win Wednesday, Behrend improves to 14-4-3 and has tied the school mark for most wins in season. In 2003, Behrend won the AMCC title and lost in the NCAA Tournament to the defending National Champions of Messiah College 3-0, while racking up a 14-5-2 season.

The winner of Saturday's game will move on to play in the Sectional Tournament on Saturday, November 17 and Sunday, November 18. The four-team regional features New Jersey City, New York University, Hamilton College, and Castleton State this weekend in Newark, NJ at New Jersey Institute of Technology. The winner of the regional will face the Montclair/Behrend winner.
