Behrend's Koman and Sorce Take Home Weekly Softball Honors
Penn
State Behrend softball players Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) and Lia
Sorce (Glenshaw/Shaler) both earned weekly AMCC honors for the week of
May 4 after helping the Behrend Lions capture the AMCC Championship over the
weekend.
Koman was named AMCC Softball Pitcher of the Week after pitching two
complete game wins in the AMCC Tournament and getting the save in the
championship game. The senior struck out 13 batters over three games
allowing just four hits. She helped the blue and white beat
Pitt-Greensburg and Mt. Aloysius to reach the championship round, and then
came in to finish off Frostburg State and clinch the title. Koman's
record on the season is 16-1 with a 1.18 E.R.A. This is Koman's second
pitcher of the week selection of the 2009 season.
Sorce
was named AMCC Player of the Week after going 5-for-7 (.714) in the AMCC
Tournament with three RBIs. In the championship game, her two-out
single drove in the game-tying run. The sophomore outfielder
then scored the game winning run after being doubled home. Sorce is
hitting .391 on the season with 24 runs scored and 49 total bases.
This is her first player of the week selection of the 2009 season.
After
claiming the AMCC Championship on Sunday, the
Penn State Behrend softball team has earned its third bid in the last four
years to the NCAA Tournament and will face Buffalo State in the first round
on Thursday, May 7 in Ithaca, NY.
Behrend (33-6) received the #5 seed and will face the #4 Bengals in the
seven-team double-elimination regional at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday. The
regional is hosted by Ithaca College and will also feature the following
teams: #1 Cortland State, #2 Rochester, #3 St. John Fisher, #6 Keuka, and #7
