Softball Swept at Home by AMCC Leading La Roche Redhawks

Behrend softball was swept in their season series with first place La Roche on the Behrend diamond on Saturday, April 21.  Behrend was dropped in game one 5-1, and after battling into extra innings in game two, a home run gave La Roche a 5-3 victory.

In game one, after giving up one run in the top of the first, Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) led off the bottom half of the inning with a triple over the leftfielder’s head.  Allison Babish (Coraopolis/Montour) drove Whitby in with a sacrifice fly to leftfield to knot the game at one.  The Redhawks would put four on the board in the fourth off a sacrifice fly and a string of base hits.  La Roche’s Bethany Peracchino did not give up another run to the blue and white and the Redhawks secured the 5-1 victory.

Behrend struck early in game two, going up 1-0 in the first inning after Whitby crossed home plate on a sacrifice groundout.  La Roche tied the game at one in bottom of the first but Behrend would reclaim the lead in the very next inning, adding two more runs to go up 3-1.  Both Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) and Cassie Miksic (Pittsburgh/Seton-LaSalle) reached on doubles and eventually scored.  The Redhawks would claw back in the fourth and fifth innings, tying the game at three a piece.  The game would remain scoreless from that point on and head into extra innings.  In the top of the eighth Sara Hoover hit a two-run bomb over the left center fence and the Redhawks would get the doubleheader sweep.

The women will be on the diamond again tomorrow, Sunday, April 22 when they square off in a doubleheader against Penn State Altoona at 1:00 p.m.
