Softball Back on Track With Doubleheader Sweep Over Altoona

Behrend softball took both games of a Sunday, April 22 doubleheader against Penn State Altoona, 5-1 and 10-2 to improve to 19-12 overall and 9-5 in the league.  Altoona falls to 4-22 overall and 2-12 in conference.

Game one started as a pitching duel, Altoona had one hit through three innings while Behrend remained hitless.  Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) broke the silence in the bottom of the third with an RBI single that drove in Annie Kozel (Connellsville/Geibel Catholic).  After loading the bases in the fifth, Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) came home on a wild pitch.  On the next pitch, Whitby unloaded the rest of the bases with a triple to the fence.  By the end of the fifth, Behrend had lit the board up with four more runs, extending their lead to 5-0.  Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) earned another complete game victory, ringing up eight Altoona batters and allowing just three hits.

Game two was all Behrend as they jumped out 2-0 in the first and did not look back.  After Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) reached on a triple down the third base line, both Kristen Macha (Export/Franklin Regional) Rachelle Lawerence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) reached base and eventually scored.  After three innings, Behrend led 7-2 and would go on to tack another run on in the fourth.  Leading for Behrend at the plate was Macha who went 3-3 with two runs and Kaschauer who 3-4 and scored three runs.  Two more runs in the fifth sealed the victory in five innings, 10-2.

Softball is on the road next at Hilbert for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 25.  The women will be back home on Saturday, April 28.
