Behrend Softball is Edged by Hiram College in Double-Header Action

The Penn State Behrend softball team hosted the Hiram Terriers on Sunday, April 6 at the Behrend fields.  The women were defeated in game one 2-0 and were edged out of game two 5-2.  The blue and white are now 13-5 thus far for the 2008 season.

Game one began with both teams battling back and fourth through the first two innings.  Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) was able to strike out three batters going into the third.  Hiram would take the lead when Stephanie Zunic stepped up and ripped a two run homer, to put the Terriers up 2-0.  The Behrend Lions continued battling but Hiram would hold them off for a 2-0 win in game one.  Koman took the loss, but threw eight strikeouts in seven innings.

Game two began with more Terrier action, as Hiram made the score 1-0 in the top of the first.  Behrend would respond when Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) doubled and Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) singled, bringing Whitby home and tying the game at 1-1.  Then in the bottom of the second, Lindsay Baughman (Warren/Warren) would hit a shot to deep right field for a triple.  Laura Frischkorn (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls) would step in to single to bring Baughman home and give Behrend a 2-1 lead.

The blue and white's lead would not last long as Hiram answered with a run in the top of the third, tying the game at two a piece.  The Behrend Lions made excellent efforts to overcome the Terriers, but Hiram would score three more runs before the end of the day, defeating the squad 5-2.

The Behrend Lions will be back in action tomorrow, April 7, when they take on the Tomcats from Thiel College.  The double-header is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.  The squad will go on to face four AMCC conference opponents, first traveling to Lake Erie on Wednesday, April 9.
