Behrend Softball Sweep Tomcats in Two Games, Improve to 15-5
Game one was packed with Behrend Lions action. The women got on the board early in the first inning when Kelly Houghton (Jamestown/Jamestown) doubled to right field, bringing in the first run of the game. The blue and white would go up 3-0 when Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) hit a single that would bring in a runner on second. Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) would step up next and hit a shot down the first baseline to bring Lubic home. In the bottom of the sixth, the Behrend Lions would end any chance of a Thiel comeback when Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) would double and bring in two runs, putting the blue and white up 6-0. With runners on second and third, Houghton would hit a shot to a hole in left field, bringing in two runs and ending the game in six innings. Pitcher Koman received the win in game one, allowing only three hits and striking out five batters. The blue and white kept the momentum going, but Thiel would not let down as easy in game two. With two outs in the first inning of play, the Tomcats would drive in two runs to take an early 2-0 lead. The Behrend squad responded in the bottom of the second when Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) would rip a shot deep to left field, bringing in runners from second and third base, tying the game 2-2. Laura Frischkorn (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls) went on to hit a sacrifice fly to allow Kaschauer to score and put the team up 3-2. Back and fourth leads took place throughout the game as play heated up. Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth, the Behrend Lions would make an impressive four run rally and go up 8-5. The women were able to hold off the Tomcats for two more innings, as they would go on to win game two 8-5.
