Behrend Softball Falls to Pitt-Greensburg in Conference Play
The Bobcats took the lead early in game one. Two Behrend Lion errors would allow Pitt-Greensburg to go on top 2-0 in the first inning. The blue and white started to generate some offense in the bottom of the third, when Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) would single to a hole in right field. Allison Babish(Coraopolis/Montour) followed, smacking a shot down the first base line and reaching second on a Bobcat error. With two outs and runners at second and third, Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) hit a line drive down the third base line, but third baseman Kelly Welsh would stop the base hit to retire the sides. The blue and white would be unable to come back from the deficit, dropping game one 2-0. Julie Koman (McKees Rocks/Montour) pitched all seven innings of action, giving up only up five hits and striking out five batters. Game two began with more Pitt-Greensburg offense. The Bobcats would get on the board first, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Behrend Lions would respond in the bottom of the second, when Greensburg pitcher Emily Dempsey walked three Behrend players. A passed ball error would allow the blue and white to score one run to trail 3-1. With the bases loaded, Whitby would walk, bringing in another run. Then junior Babish would step up to hit a grand slam over the center field fence to give the Behrend Lions a 6-3 lead at the end of two innings of play. The Bobcats would respond in the top of the third, scoring four runs and taking an 8-6 lead going into the bottom of the third. The blue and white fought hard to get back on top, but two more Pitt-Greensburg runs would end their efforts. The women would fall 10-6 in game two. The women will continue play Monday, April 14 when they travel to Westminster for a non-conference event. The double-header is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
