Penn State Behrend Softball Wins 2008 AMCC Championship, Earns NCAA Division III Tournament Bid!

The Penn State Behrend softball team won five straight games, picking up four wins on Sunday alone to capture the AMCC Championship on May 4 in Buffalo, NY.  The blue and white rallied after losing a game on Friday in the double-elimination tournament, winning their next five games to storm back and capture their second championship in three seasons.

Behrend (33-12) began its climb back to the championship round on Saturday morning, eliminating #4 seed Pitt-Bradford with a 7-2 victory.  In the second game for Behrend on Saturday, the team was tied 2-2 with the #1 seed Medaille Mavericks before the game was called due to rain.  Sunday morning, the Behrend Lions showed they were not ready to end the season, eliminating the Mavericks 8-3.

Behrend next faced the #2 seed Lake Erie Storm.  The blue and white continued to roll and earned a decisive 9-1 win to advance to the championship round.  Behrend would need to win two games against the #5 seed Frostburg State Bobcats who had not yet lost a game in the tournament.  The Behrend Lions would prove they were up to the challenge, clawing their way to a 2-0 win in game one before snatching the title with a 9-1 win in the deciding game.

This is the second AMCC title in three seasons for Behrend as the squad last captured the championship in 2006.  The blue and white move on to play in their second ever NCAA Touranment.  The NCAA softball championship brackets, site locations, and game times will be announced on Monday.
