Softball Season Ends with Loss to Rochester in NCAA Tournament

The Penn State Behrend softball team was eliminated from the 2008 NCAA Softball Tournament on Friday, March 9 with a 11-0 loss to Rochester.

With a runner on second, Alicia Citro would hit a homer to right field to put the Rochester Yellowjackets up 2-0 in the first inning.  In the bottom of the first Behrend looked to respond as Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) hit a single to right field to lead off.  Coming to the plate with two outs, Nikki Kaschauer (South Park/South Park) laced a single to put runners at first and second, but the Yellowjackets would end the threat and head to the second inning up 2-0.

Rochester (28-11) would add another run in the third and add two more in the bottom of the fourth with a Jessica Sorrentino two-run homer, putting the Yellowjackets up 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning.    The Behrend Lions would hold them to five, until the sixth inning when Rochester added two more runs for a 7-0 lead.

The blue and white tried to rally in the bottom of the inning as Kaschauer doubled to deep center field.  Lauren Lubic (Bridgeville/South Fayette) advanced to first on an error from the third baseman and Rachelle Lawerence (Warren Center/Northeast Bradford) singled to right field to load the bases for Lindsay Baughman (Warren/Warren).  Baughman got the bat on the ball, but Kaschauer was thrown out at home and the Behrend Lions would not be able to get on the scoreboard.  Rochester would add four more runs in the seventh to go up 11-0 and would close it out in the bottom of the inning for the win.

The Behrend Lions finish the 2008 season with a 33-14 overall record after claiming the 2008 AMCC Championship title.  With two NCAA appearances in the past three seasons and the loss of only one senior, the women will be well prepared for another strong year in 2009.
