Behrend Stays Perfect in AMCC Play with Sweep of Penn State Altoona

The Behrend Lions would get everything they could handle from Penn State Altoona in both games on the Behrend diamond.  Behrend would win game one 3-1 and game two 5-4.

In game one, Laura Frischkorn (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver Falls) would scatter five hits and give up one earned run to pick up the win for the Behrend Lions. Frischkorn would strike out four and walk only one before she gave way to Julie Koman (McKees Rocks, PA/Montour) in the top of the seventh.  Koman would strike out two while picking up the save.

Penn State Altoona would strike first in game one when the leadoff hitter doubled and advanced to third on a bunt. She would score on a wild pitch to put Penn State Altoona up 1-0.  The Behrend Lions would answer in the first after Katie Whitby (
Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. She would score on an Ashley Gruber (Burton, OH/Berkshire) sacrifice fly to tie the game at one.

The game would remain tied until the bottom of the fifth. The Behrend Lions would break the tie as Allison Babish (
Coraopolis, PA/Montour) would double to drive in Whitby to put the blue and white up 2-1. The blue and white would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Lindsay Baughman (Warren, PA/Warren) doubled in Rachelle Lawrence (Warren Center, PA/Northeast Bradford). Lawrence led the Behrend Lions going 2-for-3 in game one.

In game two, Behrend was unable to string their hits together throughout much of the game.  Penn State Altoona took advantage of three Behrend Lions errors in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead.  Koman would come in to shut the game down in the fourth as she would strike out seven, walk one, and give up only one hit.

The Behrend Lions bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth.  Behrend would string together six hits in the sixth to score five runs.  With two outs in the sixth and runners on first and second Babish would come to the plate and double to drive in a run.  The blue and white would then single five consecutive times to bring in four runs to go up 5-4 after the sixth inning.

In the seventh Koman would get the first batter to strike out swinging.  The next batter would then reach on the fourth error of the day for the Behrend Lions and would advance to second on a grounder to Koman.  With two outs and the tying run on second, Whitby would make a diving catch on a line drive hit to centerfield to end the game.  Whitby would go 4-for-4 in game two while driving in a run.  Adding to Behrend's eleven hits in game two was Lia Sorce (Glenshaw, PA/Shaler) and Gruber both with two.

The Behrend Lions (15-4, 7-0) will travel to Fredonia State tomorrow in a single game starting at 3:00 p.m.  The blue and white will be back on the Behrend diamond on April 8 as they meet Franciscan University for the first time in AMCC action.  That game is slated for a 3:00 p.m. start time.
