Behrend Sweeps Franciscan to Clinch AMCC Regular Season Title

The Behrend Lions softball team captured the AMCC regular season championship with 13-0 and 22-4 wins over the visiting Franciscan Lady Barons.  The blue and white remain undefeated in the AMCC with one game to finish against Mt. Aloysius.

Behrend jumped on the Lady Barons in the bottom of the first scoring six runs on four hits. Katie Whitby (Tyrone/Tyrone) led the inning off with a single and was driven in by Amy Greene’s (Erie/Strong Vincent) double. Julie Koman also doubled in the inning driving in two runs.

Maddie Wieser
(Erie/Collegiate Academy) hit a three run homerun in the second to put Behrend up by 10-0. Whitby singled in Kimmy Pol (Erie/Central) who tripled earlier in the inning. The blue and white scored one run in both the third and fourth to run the score to 13-0 ending the game in five innings.

Koman got win number 12 on the year pitching three innings of two hit ball. Lara Frischkorn (Beaver Falls/Beaver Falls) pitched two innings of relief not allowing a hit and sitting down four Franciscan batters.

Amy Greene (Erie/Strong Vincent) went 3-for-4 for the blue and white scoring twice and driving in one. Wieser homered and had four RBI. Koman would be a force at the plate as well going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Behrend found themselves down 2-0 going into the bottom of the second of game two before they put up a seven spot.  Wieser homered to lead off the inning followed by four consecutive base hits put Behrend up by one.  Wieser added two more RBI in the second with a two run single.  Behrend did not look back from there tallying 24 hits and 22 runs to capture the AMCC regular season championship.

Behrend had seven players with multiple hits.  Greene went 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.  Wieser ended game two with two hits and four RBI.  Both Pol and Nicole Ganster (Trafford/Penn-Trafford) had three hits apiece.  Ganster also drove in three runs.

Wieser also picked up the win in game two going two innings giving up two hits and two runs.  Frischkorn cleaned things up in the third and fourth before she gave way to Stacey Peterson (Meadville/Cochranton) who pitched a clean fifth inning.

The Behrend Lions (28-5, 17-0) will travel to La Roche on April 25 to complete their game against Mt. Aloysius. Behrend plays Grove City on April 28 at 5:00 p.m.
