Behrend Hosts AMCC Softball Tournament: Day Two Recap
Game Five: Medaille 9, La Roche 1 (five innings)
Day two opened with the #3 Medaille Mavericks taking on the #5 La Roche
Redhawks in an elimination game. The Mavericks slugger Alyssa Zemla started
off the scoring in the first with a two-run homer. The Redhawks defense
fell apart in the second as the Mavericks scored six unearned runs capped
off with another two-run homer from Zemla that put the Mavericks up 8-0. La Roche
got on the board in the third as Kayla Strittmatter singled in a run to pull
the Redhawks within seven. Medaille plated a runner in the bottom half
of the third to extend its lead back to eight. Zemla went 2-for-3
with four RBI in the game for the Mavericks while Strittmatter was 1-for-2
with La Roche's lone RBI. Medaille plays the winner of game six and La
Roche is eliminated.
Game Six: Frostburg State 3, Pitt-Greensburg 1
#4 Pitt-Greensburg battled #6 Frostburg State in tournament game six.
Frostburg got on the board in the top of the second when Brooke Speake
tripled, driving in Kaitlyn Wagner for a 1-0 lead. Speake came up big
again in the fourth when she again tripled, driving in Wagner and Victoria
Krichbaum for a 3-0 advantage. Frostburg pitcher Katelyn Coffey kept
Pitt-Greensburg off the scoreboard until the sixth inning when Jennifer
Dempsey's RBI single made it a 3-1 game. Coffey retired all three
batters she faced in the seventh inning and earned the win for her team.
Frostburg advances to face Medaille in tournament game seven, while
Pitt-Greensburg is eliminated.
Game Seven: Frostburg State 5, Medaille 2
Frostburg State and Medaille met in a
rematch of game one of the AMCC Tournament. The roles however were
reversed with the Bobcats coming out on top in the elimination game.
The Bobcats never trailed in the game getting one run in the third off of a
Brooke Tapman sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Lindsay Freitag.
Frostburg State busted the game open with a three run sixth with Tapman
homering to leftfield. The Mavericks cut into the five run lead in the
bottom half of the inning. After back to back singles Kristen Rohe
doubled down the leftfield line to bring in two runs. The Bobcats got
out of the inning without any more damage and took a 5-2 victory.
Frostburg advances to play the loser of the Mt. Aloysius versus Penn State
Behrend game on Saturday, while Medaille is eliminated.
Game Eight: Penn State Behrend 2, Mt. Aloysius 1
The top two seeds from the regular season faced off in game eight of the
tournament. Behrend got on the board early as leadoff hitter Katie
Whitby singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Allison Babish, and scored
on an error to put Behrend up 1-0 after one inning. In the bottom of
the second Amy Greene reached on an error and advanced to second on Lindsay
Baughman's sacrifice bunt. Lia Sorce continued her hot hitting with a
RBI single to put the Behrend Lions ahead 2-0 after two innings of play.
Julie Koman had a shutout going until the fifth inning when Renee Schmidt
led off the inning with a triple and scored on Jess Walters' sacrifice fly
to make it a 2-1 game. Koman got out of the inning with the lead and
retired six straight over the final two innings for the complete game
victory. Behrend advances to the championship round on Sunday at 10:00
a.m. while Mt. Aloysius plays in tournament game nine versus Frostburg.
Game Nine: Frostburg State 3, Mt. Aloysius 0
The #6 Frostburg State Bobcats entered the game trying to keep its
Cinderella run going in an elimination game with #2 Mt. Aloysius.
Frostburg got a run in the first when Brooke Tapman hit a 2-out triple and
was driven in by Victoria Krichbaum for a 1-0 lead. The score remained
1-0 until the top of the sixth when Frostburg got two more runs.
Tapman walked and was doubled home by Jenna Delaney, who was in turn driven
in by Samantha Quirin's single. That was plenty of support for
Frostburg pitcher Megan Magee who pitched a complete game 3-0 shutout.
Frostburg advances to the championship round and will play Penn State Behrend at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday in tournament game ten, with game eleven to
follow if necessary. Mt. Aloysius is eliminated.
