Behrend Tennis Builds Momentum Heading into End of Season

The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team grabbed two key conference victories last week as they head into the end of their season and the AMCC tournament.  Behrend stomped Penn State Altoona 8-1 on April 1st and then edged out Frostburg State 5-4 six days later to take a share of the conference lead.  Behrend and Frostburg are currently both 3-1 in conference play.

The men swept doubles play against the Altoona Lions.  Kelly Manning (Sharpsville/Kennedy Catholic) and Brad Nagel (West Alexander/McGuffey) sealed the doubles domination with a 9-8 victory in the third-flight.  Scott Shaw (Tulsa, OK/Jenks) and Miles Boyea (St. Vincent, WI/Upper Canada) led the singles attack, both winning in straight sets.

The difference maker in the close victory over Frostburg State proved to be the bottom half of singles competition.  Jim Palmer (Sharon/Sharon), Shane Mosier (Kersey/St. Marys) and Trevor Dougherty (Meadville/Meadville) won third, fourth, and sixth-flight singles respectively.  The strong singles performance was enough to overcome the Bobcats 5-4.

The men have two conference games remaining, both against Pitt-Greensburg.  The Bobcats come to town on Tuesday, April 10 at 3:00 p.m. before Behrend heads out there the very next day for a 12:00 p.m. match.  The conference tournament is scheduled for Sunday, April 15 at 9:00 a.m.
