Volleyball Announces 2006 Freshman Class
Penn
State Behrend volleyball coaches Phil Pisano and Gerry Vensel have
announced the incoming freshman class for 2006. Lorena
Babbitt, Brooke Gallentine, Carissa Johnston, Amy Lawrence, Sheila
Ogden, and Deanna Shaffer, all from Pennsylvania, will be joining
the Behrend volleyball program this fall.
Pisano said, "This incoming class has tremendous potential.
They are great athletes and great people as well. We are thrilled to
have them join a group of student-athletes that we are already very
proud of."
Lorena Babbitt, a 5-11 outside hitter from Cochranton, played at
Cochranton High School for coach Marci Malliard. Babbitt was named
to the 2005 PAVBCA All-State Team and also was selected as a
District 10 First Team All-Star. In addition, she competed with
FLASH Volleyball Club and was an all-state player for her high
school basketball team.
Brooke Gallentine, a 5-8 setter from Mt. Pleasant, played at
Southmoreland High School for coach Liz Zgorecki. Gallentine was a
two-time All-Section player for the Scotties and was named to the
2005 All-WPIAL Team. She was a member of the high school honor roll
and the Spanish National Honor Society. In addition, Gallentine
competed with Penn Highlands Volleyball Club and on her high school
softball team.
Carissa Johnston, a 5-10 outside hitter from Cambridge Springs,
played at Cambridge Springs High School for coach Rob Schmidt.
Johnston was named to the 2005 PAVBCA All-State Team and also was
selected as a District 10 First Team All-Star. She competed with
Rivercreek Volleyball Club and on her high school basketball team.
Johnston was also a member of her high school national honor
society.
Amy Lawrence, a 5-5 setter from New Wilmington, played at Wilmington
High School under coach Amber Marett. Lawrence was a District 10
First Team All-Star and the 2005 Region 5 Volleyball Player of the
Year. She was team captain for the Greyhounds and member of the
high honor roll. In addition, she competed in the past with
S.W.A.T. Volleyball Club.
Sheila Ogden, a 5-11 middle hitter from Grove City, played at Grove
City High School for coach Shawnee Denbow. Ogden was named to the
2005 PAVBCA All-State Team and also was selected as a District 10
First Team All-Star. In addition, she competed with Rivercreek
Volleyball Club and on her high school basketball team. Ogden was
also a member of the high school honor roll.
Deanna Shaffer, a 5-4 setter from New Castle, played at Laurel High
School for coach Terry Watters. Shaffer was a three-sport athlete
for the Spartans and a co-captain on the volleyball, basketball and
softball teams at Laurel. She also received the President’s Award
for Academic Excellence and was a member of the high school high
honor roll.
In 2005 Behrend went 26-8 while capturing the AMCC Championship and
earning the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament. The
Behrend Lions volleyball team will open the 2006 season when they travel
to Thiel on September 6 for a 7:00 p.m. match. On September 8
and 9 the blue and white will see their first action at home as they
welcome five other teams to the Junker Center for the Penn State
Behrend Invitational.
