Behrend Women End Pitt-Bradford's Season for Third Straight Year

The Penn State Behrend women's basketball team put an end to conference rival Pitt-Bradford's season for the third consecutive year Tuesday, February 21, with a tight 55-53 win in the Junker Center.

With the victory, the women improve to 17-9 on the season and move on to the semi-finals of the AMCC tournament in Buffalo, NY, to face the top-seeded Medaille Mavericks (23-1, 18-0).

The first half was a back and forth battle, with Pitt-Bradford coming out on top.  The Panthers went into the break with a four-point lead, 30-26.  Rachel Slomski (Erie/McDowell) stole the show early, scoring all of Behrend's first 12 points.

The Panthers extended their lead to seven points at the 14:55 mark after a jumper by Amanda Williams, but Behrend's Julia Andrus (Corry/Corry)connected on a lay-in plus one followed by four more made free-throws in a three-minute stretch to tie up the score at 51-51. Then Andrus hit Rachel Slomski (Erie/McDowell) on a post cut for a two point lead. The Behrend Lions then forced three more turnovers and 22 for the game and held on for the two-point win.

Behrend was paced by Brittany Mays Knox/Keystone) who hauled down 11 rebounds, had eight points, four assists and three steals in 37 minutes of action. Slomski hit for 16 points and Andrus added 13 including 9-of-11 at the line. Bradford was led by Williams with 16 points and Megan Richards chipped in 11.

The semifinal match-up with the Mavericks is scheduled for Friday, February 24 at 5:00 p.m.  Medaille, who just joined the AMCC last season, hosts the women's tournament for the first time.
