Women's Soccer Hosts 2005 ECAC Southern Region Championship

The Eastern College Athletic Conference has announced the field for the 2005 Southern Region Tournament and the Penn State Behrend women's soccer team has earned the number-one seed. Behrend will be hosting the semi-finals on Saturday, November 12, at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and the championship game on Sunday, November 13, at 1:00 p.m.

It is a great honor for our program to be selected as the top seed in the ECAC Tournament," said head coach Patrick O'Driscoll. "It is a great pick-up for us after losing the conference championship on penalty kicks this weekend."

Behrend is 14-2-4 and will play the winner of the semi-final on Wednesday, November 9. In the quarter-finals, fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall (10-5-1) will be playing at fourth-seeded Gettysburg (8-7-3) at 7:00 p.m. Ursinus (13-4-2) is the number-two seeded team and also receives a bye. They await the winner of sixth-seeded Washington & Jefferson (10-8-2) versus the three-seeded Carnegie Mellon (10-4-2) game on Wednesday.

Behrend has appeared in the ECAC Tournament five times. The blue and white made three straight appearances in 1997-98-99 and a year ago in 2004. Last season, Behrend entered the ECAC Tournament as a three-seed and defeated La Roche 4-0 before they were beaten 1-0 by Carnegie Mellon to finish the season at 14-6-1.

"The team has worked very hard this year and is playing well," said O'Driscoll. "They deserve this opportunity to compete for another title. I also hope that the Erie soccer community gets behind the tournament. There will be some very talented teams playing on the Behrend Fields this weekend.”

In Saturday's AMCC Championship, Behrend battled with number-one Frostburg State (11-5-3) for 110 minutes of scoreless action before finally succumbing to a 4-3 penalty kick shootout showdown that would prove to be enough to move Frostburg on to the NCAA Tournament.
