Gettysburg Upends Top Seeded Behrend Lions in ECAC Tournament
The Bullets Will Battle CMU, a 4-1 Winner Over Ursinus in Title Game

The semi-finals of the 2005 ECAC Southern Region Soccer Tournament opened on Saturday, November 12, with the Gettysburg Bullets bouncing the Behrend Lions 3-0.

The Bullets (10-7-3), who entered as the four seed, were quick and scored fast with an unassisted goal by junior Steph Smith at the 4:18 mark of the first half. Then Smith assisted Colleen Stuart on a second goal with 11:50 remaining in the first half to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime.

Gettysburg's Leslie Hynes connected off a pass from Casey Norman at the sixty-ninth minute to complete the scoring. The Bullets outshot Behrend 16-7 while the corners were even at three apiece. Behrend's Dara Nielson (Cranberry /Seneca Valley) made eight saves in goal as Behrend concludes its season at 14-3-4.

"Overall it was a great season," said head coach Patrick O'Driscoll. "We played hard and lost to a very talented team today. We are very pleased with the effort of our players."

Gettysburg defeated fifth-seeded Franklin & Marshall, 1-0 in the quarterfinals and will meet Carnegie Mellon (12-4-2) who was a 4-1 winner over Ursinus (13-5-2). CMU senior forward Hallie Dumont had a special day leading the offense with a pair of goals and an assist on another.

Dumont connected at the 21:34 mark in the first half and Abigail Coffin scored a second goal for the Tartans in the closing seconds of the first half to take a 2-0 lead to the break. It looked as if CMU would run away the contest before Ursinus midfielder Deb Jensen found the back of the net 1:03 seconds into the second half, however, Dumont scored 2 minutes 56 seconds later to create another two-goal gap. CMU's Nadya Yaghoubi finished the day's scoring off a pass from Dumont at the 65:44 mark to make the final 4-1. The Bears entered as the number-two seed and received a first-round bye to the semi-finals, while CMU trounced W & J, 6-0 to get here. Ursinus finishes the season 13-5-2.

With the top two seeds getting knocked out today, CMU (#3) will battle Gettysburg (#4) for the 2005 ECAC Southern Region Women's Soccer Championship. The game is scheduled for Sunday, November 13 at 1:00 p.m. on the Behrend Fields.
