Behrend Concludes Tremendous Season With NCAA Tournament Loss to the Defending National Champions
The women came in at 14-5-1 after beating Frostburg State to win the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship, while the Falcons entered at 15-2, receiving an at-large bid after losing to Elizabethtown in the Commonwealth Conference finals, 1-0. Messiah came out firing in the first half, keeping the ball deep within Behrend’s end and finally going up 1-0 off a header by Annie Futato. Kacie Klynstra would score minutes later on a cross pass through the box. Behrend’s best chance of the half came when Whitney Putnam (Erie/Villa Maria) got free with the ball on right wing but was slide tackled by Messiah goalkeeper, Brindley Beckwith. Futato tacked one on late in the half to put the Falcons up 3-0 at the break. The second half produced more of the same, as Stef Rowe found net twelve minutes in. Futato picked her third goal of the game about half way through the period and Kati Ehly struck with just two minutes left, to secure a 6-0 shutout. Shot totals summed up at 30 for Messiah and one for Behrend. Messiah recorded all three corners. Kayla Frost (Venetia/Peters Township) did record 11 saves in goal for Behrend. The Behrend women close out a successful season at 14-6-1 and will lose only one senior as they look ahead to next season. Messiah moves on to the second-round to face the winner of the Ithaca College vs. Brockport match-up. Saturday’s regional final is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
