Women's Soccer to Make Third NCAA Tournament Appearance

The Behrend women's soccer team is preparing to make their second NCAA tournament appearance in two years.  This marks the third National Tournament appearance by the women's soccer program (2000-2006-2007).

The NCAA Division III match-ups were announced this morning, giving the Behrend Lions a game in the first round.  The women will be matched up against the Wittenberg Tigers (17-2-2) to be played Friday, November 9.  Wittenberg advanced to the NCAA tournament with a 2-1 overtime defeat of Denison college to win the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).  The Tigers are are ranked #12 in the NSCAA/Adidas Rankings.

The team has had an outstanding season thus far, with all members contributing in their own ways.  Leading the way in goals and points is midfielder Nikki Frisbee (Valencia/Mars) with 12 goals and four assists.  While forward Beth Manganaro (Pittsburgh/Chartiers Valley) has tallied 5 goals and 4 assists for the blue and white this season.  Protecting the Behrend Lions net is goalkeeper Kayla Frost (Venetia/Peters Township) who has recorded nine shut-outs on the year and carries a goals against average of only 1.10.  Helping Frost in the back is a line of top-notch, veteran defenders.  These include senior captains Jessica Carlson (Jefferson Hills/Thomas Jefferson) and Emily Rogan (Bethal Park/Bethal Park) as well as Katie Ritchey (Butler/Butler).

The women received the automatic bid after capturing the 2007 AMCC Championship title.  The women defeated Frostburg State in the championship game 2-1, advancing them to the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The blue and white now have an overall record of 11-6-3 and finished 8-0-1 in regular season conference play.
