Career
Day
The
Math Options Career Day is held every year early in May. The day's activities
include challenge contests, workshops, an activity fair,
and keynote presentations by women in careers as diverse
as veterinary science, aerospace engineering, and the computer industry.
Prizes are awarded for the school challenge contest winners and gifts are given to each participant.
Workshops are hands-on,
and have included designing bridges, examining animals, building simple motors, and solving CSI mysteries,
just to mention a few. Participants leave the program with a good sense
of career options, the importance of the study of math, and the knowledge
that a network of mentors is available. Teachers and guidance counselors
attending the career day have the opportunity to attend workshops designed
for educators on how to encourage students to pursue math, and related
careers. To obtain information on how to participate in the Career Day,
7th and 8th grade girls should contact their math and/or science teachers.
