Plastics Workshops and Seminars
Thermoplastic Materials and Testing
Hands-On Workshop

Fee:           $1,095

Instructor: Brian Young

WHO SHOULD ATTEND:

Engineers, technicians, sales engineers, managers, and anyone involved with specifying materials or dealing with material data sheets should attend this two day workshop. It is also valuable to anyone who would like a better understanding of how plastics differ from other materials.

EDUCATIONAL GOALS:

This workshop will provide a comprehensive understanding of the common ASTM tests found on a standard material data sheet. Participants will become familiar with many of the actual tests through a hands-on lab portion which will point out the strengths and weaknesses of the individual tests. The participant will leave the workshop with a better understanding of the values presented when comparing materials and be better informed as to how those values can be applied.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:

1. Plastics Phenomena - what makes plastics different from other materials

  • Viscoelasticity
  • Entanglement
  • Orientation
  • Crystallinity
2. Mechanical Testing
  • Tensile
  • Flexural
  • Impact
3. Physical Testing
  • Hardness
  • Specific Gravity
4. Rheological Testing
  • Non-Newtonian Behavior
  • Melt Index
  • Rheometry
5. Thermal Properties Testing
  • DSC
  • DMA
  • TGA
