College Teaching Seminar Series - Fall 2009 (PDF version)

1. The Incentive and Reward of Reading

Guest speakers/facilitators: Dean Baldwin, Ruth Pflueger.

Thursday, Oct. 1, 11:15 - 12:30 p.m., REED 114

Monday, Oct. 5, 4:00 - 5:15 p.m., Kochel 69

A college sociology professor noticed that close to 60% of his students did not complete reading assignments. If you have the same problems in motivating students to read, or simply curious about how much students understand the materials when they do read, you are welcome to join us for the discussion: to read or not to read, the comprehension of reading materials, reading assignments and grades.

Please RSVP to Qi Dunsworth by 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, Sep. 29. Thank you.

Are you looking for teaching strategies to engage students in reflective thinking, writing, or collaboration outside of the classroom? An increasing number of professors have already achieved success through the PSU blogging tool. In addition to posting course contents, students are encouraged to critique each other's work, share resources, and build ePortfolios. Please join us to discuss and create innovative teaching strategies that would motivate students to learn beyond regular class meetings.
