4. Teaching, Research and Service: Can Service Learning and Public Scholarship Bridge the Gap?
By Dr. Dawn Blasko, Associate Professor of Psychology, School of Humanities and Social Sciences
Monday session – Feb. 11, 4:00 – 5:15 pm, Reed 114
Tuesday Session – Feb. 12, 12:15 – 1:30 pm, Reed 114
We hear that Penn State's land grant mission asks us tackle real community needs, but we also know it is risky to require students (especially in GEN ED classes) to do work in the community outside of class. In this session, we will discuss strategies for enhancing student learning by working on projects in the community. We will overview the interdisciplinary minor in civic and community engagement and talk about ways that creative faculty and their students can combine teaching, learning and scholarship.
5. Being There: Human to Human Learning in the Classroom
A teaching luncheon hosted by Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence
Thursday, Mar. 27, noon – 1:30 pm, MISC Studio (Kochel 69)
At this teaching luncheon, we will have a conversation with Charlotte Houghton, 2007 Penn State Teaching Fellow Award recipient for Excellence in Teaching. Behrend faculty members will be able to interact with Charlotte and colleagues from other campuses through Penn State’s video bridge.
6. Behrend Student Reflection of Best Learning Experience

Tuesday Session – Apr. 15, 12:15 – 1:30 pm, Reed 114
A student panel will be invited to talk about their best learning experiences and answer questions from participating faculty members.

Using Inquiry to Enhance Students’ Critical Thinking
Thursday, March 20, 4:00 - 6:00 pm, REDC 208
Increasingly, the qualities expected of college graduates emphasize abilities to research and solve problems and use critical thinking skills to make decisions. To address these expectations, we need to develop learning environments that rely on problems, projects and cases as a means of preparing students. The challenge for each of us is to determine how to integrate these experiences into our courses and find ways to assess the impact of these changes.
Participants in this workshop will learn about different approaches for using inquiry in their courses. By reflecting on their teaching goals, participants will have the opportunity to determine the best inquiry strategy for achieving those goals, develop an integrated design and assessment plan to use to implement the changes, and begin to design activities and assessment instruments to use as part of the redesign. Participants are encouraged to bring any relevant course materials with them to this session.
Finding the Evidence for Academic Program Assessment
Friday, March 21, 2:30 - 4:30 pm, REDC 207
Navigating the road that leads to a program assessment plan can be tricky. In this workshop, participants will learn a process to use for program assessment planning and engage in activities designed to help operationalize the process. Participants are encouraged to bring a list of their program goals and 2 or 3 syllabi from required courses in their programs. By the end of this session, you will be well on your way to completion of Steps 1, 2 and 3 of the Penn State Program Assessment planning timeline.
RSVP required by March 18. Please email QiDunsworth@psu.edu or call 898-6537.
