Airplane design - Submitted by Jarrin Sperry and Tom Brunner, Corry School District, Corry, PA

Science Concepts:

Four forces of flight: lift, thrust, drag, gravity

PA Standards Addressed:

  1. Students will build two paper airplanes of their own design
  2. After students build planes, they will observe and record a flight log, including:
    • time aloft (in seconds)
    • distance flown (in meters)
    • acrobatics accuracy (target flight; in centimeters)
  3. Students will hypothesize which planes will perform best in each area of flight
  4. Students will then test hypotheses and vary flight dynamics of planes through use of tape, paperclips, etc.
