- Advocates
for Women in Science, Engineering &
Mathematics (AWSEM)
While most girls are excited about science
in childhood, these same girls begin
to lose interest in math and science
around the age of twelve. These girls
then drop out of math and science classes,
often forever closing the doors on a
vast and diverse array of career opportunities.
AWSEM has developed a model of advocacy,
as well as a variety of products, designed
to encourage girls to pursue their early
interests in the sciences.

The Iowa State University Library developed
this site in April 1994. Its purpose
was to inaugurated document the history
of women in science and engineering.
One of goals is to encourage women to
become scientists and engineers in the
future. The archives document the lives
and careers of those who have achieved
this goal in the past.
